MONTREAL. Toward the end of May, the group Renewal in the Spirit organised a vigil in preparation for Pentecost. The same day the animators of the Summer Camp went to l’Île Perrot for two days of reflection and spiritual preparation under the guidance of Fr. Richard. - At the beginning of June, Fr. Richard gathered the staff to announce to them the nomination of Fr. Luc Lantagne as the new pastor. He will replace Fr. Costamagna who accomplished that task for the past 12 years and who now will take a well-deserved sabbatical. The director of the community, Fr. Dominique Britschu, has equally come to the end of his mandate as director of the community and will be replaced by Fr. Richard.
In mid-June some workers completed the renovation of the mezzanine, finishing in time for the celebration of the solemn feast of Corpus Domini. That day was a very festive one at Maria Ausiliatrice for we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Fr. Luc’s priestly Ordination. The presence of a numerous congregation of parishioners and friends made the occasion very special. The confreres of Sherbrooke were also present.
Br. Jim Zettel has arrived from Salesian High School in New Rochelle, N.Y. to be part of the animating team for Camp. A few days later arrived also from Mexico Br. Fidelmar Perez who will also be part of the Summer Camp team.
On the feast of St.John the Baptist, a civic holiday in Québec, the Biblical Group, having come to the end of their course under the guidance of Deacon Peter Biello, went on pilgrimage to the Rigaud Sanctuary, accompanied by Fr. Luc. The group Santa Famiglia also went on pilgrimage to the Sacred Heart Sanctuary of Beauvoir in the vicinity of Sherbrooke. Fr. Luc accompanied about 100 persons.

TORONTO. On June 3rd an open air Mass was held for our 3 elementary schools at Esther Lorrie Park. Over 1000 students and staff were in attendance. A beautiful sunny day helped to make this event a wonderful experience for all concerned.
Our boarder Sebastian Navarro was honoured at the De LaSalle graduation ceremony where he won a statuette and $500 for his De LaSallian spirit. - Fr. Occhio spent 10 days in Italy in June to assist at his grand nephew's priestly ordination on June 13th. - Fr. Mike strutted his BBQ talents on June 7th for Fr. Four young adults participated in this annual event. – A few days later Frs. Kelly, George and Bro. Bernie assisted at the retirement party for Lorrie Byrns, the outgoing chaplain at Msgr. Johnson High School. Marilena Bernardinelli, a young Salesian Cooperator
has been chosen as the new chaplain.
From the 15th through the afternoon of the 17th the Community went to Harrison Springs, BC, for a three day relaxed outing and sharing of sorts. We enjoyed the informal atmosphere and good weather, having Mass in the morning together in Fr. John Basso’s quarters with the rest of the day free. We met for supper each evening.
Late afternoon of the 18th and 19th we worked on SDB Community Plan and Budget for the new school year, which starts earlier this September due to the 2010 Winter Olympics in February when our Catholic School System will be out for an “earlier” two week “March”/Feb. Break for the Olympics duration.
The Knights of Columbus had their final Pancake Breakfast on this first day of summer after all the morning Masses on June 21st. The following day the various school awards were presented during a morning session in our Don Bosco Gym with family and friends present. The 22nd was the grade seven’s Graduation Mass followed by a delicious buffet supper in OLGC Sch. Auditorium, which was colourfully decorated. All the Salesians were present for the Concelebrated Mass and dinner awards.
The feast of St. John the Baptist was also the name’s day of Frs. John and Jan. There was a School Closing Mass with a half day attendance and the distribution of report cards. Noon hour brought the School Staff and Salesians together for a farewell lunch, as some of the teachers will be moving on.
The 25th saw Fr. Jan leave for his vacation to visit with his family in Poland, whereas Fr. Mario had a late night flight to the Philippines on June 28th to holiday with his aging mother. That leaves three of us holding the fort.
Fr. Sarmed, our Chaldean priest in residence, celebrated his 10th Anniversary of Ordination on the 26th. Speaking of anniversaries, the El Shaddai parish group had a pot luck buffet supper in the school auditorium to celebrate their organization’s 20th. That afternoon the Praise Dance Team had their picnic at Bear Creek Park. Fr. Dave and Bro. Jerry attended.
Between weddings, funerals, baptisms, the Graduation of Holy Cross High Sch. Seniors, where Fr. Dave gave the main address, June has been a busy, celebrated month where the weather has certainly cooperated … warm and comfortable.

INTERVIEW : The Salesian Priest
On the occasion of the opening of the year for priests which Pope Benedict XVI has called for, we put some questions to Fr. Francesco Cereda, councilor for formation for the Salesian Congregation (June 19, 2009).
Q: What were the reasons which led the Pope to call for this year of grace?
A: The occasion for this Year for Priests is the occurrence of the 150th anniversary of the death of Saint John Mary Vianney, the Curé of Ars, an exemplary model of the priest, patron of parish priests; he will probably be proclaimed patron of all priests.
July 1st was an important date in the history of our religious province for it marked the union of our St.Joseph Province with that of St.Philip, East USA. Frs Authier and Trottier left the day before so as to be present in New Rochelle, N.Y. –about 15 miles from Manhattan Island- for that event as well as for the installation of the new Provincial, Fr. Thomas Dunne who assumes the leadership of the unified province from Fr. Jim Heuser. Bro. Marcel Gauthier and Pierre Larocque, national coordinator of the Salesian Cooperators, went along also.
That day, Frs. Enzo and Tito, profiting of the holiday-Canada Day- went on an outing to Thousand Islands & Ottawa with Mr. Peter Biello.

SURREY, B.C. June certainly was a month of celebrations in our parish setting. On the1st, Frs. Dave, Jan and John represented our community at the Knights of Columbus Clergy Appreciation Dinner in Vancouver. They also came home with a door prize basket of goodies that they won.
On the 4th we honoured Fr. Sarmed Biloues for his 34th birthday with a luncheon party prepared by Br. Jerry with a “dag wood” sandwich, soup, salad, cake, card and gift. It was a happy occasion celebrated with most of the parish staff present.
The customary Deanery Meeting was held at St. Paul’s Parish in Richmond on the 9th, whereas our Salesian Cooperators’ monthly meetings were moved to coincide with the First Fridays beginning in September. In this way they could take advantage of attending the 1st Friday 7 pm Mass.
Two visitors graced our community this month. Fr. Peter Zago, SDB, a missionary from Questa, Pakistan, and originally from the Philippine South Province, was invited to speak at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in White Rock, BC; they have financially been sponsoring his mission in Pakistan. He came to show a slide presentation of where their assistance helped in his work, and also to thank them for their generous support. Father arrived on the 10th and spoke at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Novena Mass that evening as well as some of the other weekend Masses.
Bro. Bernie Dubé, SDB, also arrived to promote vocations and to speak with our young adults and an interested young man who actually flew in from outer BC by plane to be interviewed and find out about us. Bro. Bernie visited Holy Cross, spoke to the Singles for Christ Group and Praise Team, as well as to the Salesian Cooperators on the 12th. He graciously put his cooking skills to work in making us a home cooked meal as we celebrated Fr. Jan’s 15th Anniversary of Ordination.
Our Corpus Christi Procession was held on the afternoon of the 14th with nine ethnic altar stops around Our Lady of Good Counsel grass surfaced soccer field. A good crowd attended as the rosary, scriptural readings and hymns were said, read and sung with the Blessed Sacrament the main focus of love and attention.
We are therefore consecrated men, and also for the Salesian priest it is important to make clear his identity as a consecrated person which precedes and unifies his spiritual and apostolic life as a priest.

In addition to this, there is an explicit invitation addressed to each priest to live a life of deep spirituality and strive for holiness. In the plenary meeting of the Congregation of the Clergy on March 16, Pope Benedict said in this regard: “Precisely to encourage priests in this striving for spiritual perfection on which, above all, the effectiveness of their ministry depends, I have decided to establish a special ‘Year for Priests.’” Each priest is personally involved, so that he may learn to live an authentic spiritual experience and carry out an effective apostolate. “Christ’s fidelity, the priest’s fidelity” is the theme of the year; it will help the priest to discover his relationship with the Lord Jesus and to live his vocational response with fidelity.
Q: What is the cultural context in which today’s priest has to live and work?
A: Today’s cultural context is marked by post-modernity, relativism, and secularism. It is a challenge to the priest. The tendency to relegate the faith to the private domain and to reduce its public relevance has an influence on the mission of the priest, who is being called nowadays to carry out his ministry in this new situation. But today’s culture is also waiting for the proclamation of the Gospel and the invitation to meet the Lord Jesus. These are the times in which priests are called to live and to work with joy and hope. The Year for Priests can help the priest to recognize the opportunities and to face up to the challenges presented to his mission of evangelization at this particular time. Then in some cultural contexts neglecting the figure of the priest runs the risk of being seen in an unfavourable light, on account of the scandals and abuses affecting a small minority; this year can be a help in recognizing and appreciating the humanizing role of the priest also in today’s society.
Q: What fruits can we expect in the Church from the Year for Priests?
A: This year will provide an opportunity to reflect on the person of the priest, who is called to live his spirituality and carry out his ministry in a context that has changed profoundly and is in a state of rapid evolution. It could lead to a deeper appreciation in theological and practical terms of the life of communion within the Church, in the relationship between the various vocations: the relationship between the priest and the bishop, the brotherhood of priests, working in the apostolate together, overcoming clericalism while being aware of the priest’s being irreplaceable. Given the shortage of priests, due importance should be given to prayer for vocations, to the prayer of the community “waiting for a priest.” One would also hope that more attention would be given to the formation of priests, initial and ongoing, and to the care of vocations to ministry.
Q: How can the Salesian Congregation celebrate this year?
A: We will be keeping this Year for Priests while we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of our Congregation by Don Bosco, and while we are preparing to celebrate the centennial of the death of Father Rua, his first successor. All of this reminds us of our fundamental identity as a Congregation: Don Bosco founded a society of men consecrated to God for the young, and Father Rua was his faithful disciple along the same path. Our common vocation is that of Salesian consecrated life. Prior to the difference in vocation between the Salesian priest and the Salesian brother, there is our being “sent to the young, in fraternal communities following Christ obedient, poor, and chaste.”
