Le p. Olivier est professeur de sémiologie aux Facultés Catholiques de Lyon. Pendant ce mois, nous avons mis le point final à la rédaction des documents légaux concernant les diverses corporations du secteur canadien de notre Congrégation. Voici en vrac quelques données; La Société des Salésiens du Québec est devenue La Société des Salésiens du Canada (The Society of the Salesians of Canada). Les Œuvres et Missions Don Bosco- qui était jusqu’à maintenant une « filiale » de la ci-dessus Société – a maintenant une incorporation distincte. Les officiers de ces 2 sociétés sont : président- p. Richard Authier; vice-président- p. Roméo Trottier; secrétaire- p. Alain Léonard. Et pour les OMDB, p. Luc Lantagne, dg et trésorier. Ce qui a fait dire au p. Richard, qu’avant il n’était que provincial; maintenant il est président…!
Le nouveau conseil provincial des coopérateurs salésiens, coordonné par Mme Josée Paquet, a tenu sa 1ère rencontre; les 6 membres ont analysé la situation présente des centres et précisé les priorités des 3 années à venir. La consulte provinciale de la Famille Salésienne s’est également réunie à Montréal afin de planifier les 3 événements suivants : la visite de Don Adriano Bregolin, vicaire du Recteur Majeur le 16 nov. à Montréal, la journée de la Famille Salésienne et le pèlerinage de l’urne de Don Bosco au Canada en octobre 2010. Sr. Elizabeth Purcell participait à cette rencontre pour la 1ère fois en tant que Provinciale des fma du Canada, en remplacement de Sr. Alphonsine Roy, qui est retournée dans son cher Lagacéville, N.B.
C’est désormais tradition établie que les salésiens et salésiennes de Montréal et de Sherbrooke se rendent en pèlerinage aux monuments funéraires de leurs membres défunts vers le 2 novembre au Repos St-François d’Assise, dans l’est de Montréal; c’est une terre sacrée. Ce que nous avons fait le 27 de ce mois. Les confrères de Sherbrooke avaient programmé une journée de récollection à la Chapelle de la Réparation chez les Capucins de Pointe-aux-Trembles. Après un temps de recueillement et le diner, Mgr Régis Belzile, ofm cap., évêque émérite du Tchad, nous a entretenus sur divers aspects du ministère sacerdotal (c’est l’Année Sacerdotale) et son expérience mission- naire au Tchad. Nous nous sommes ensuite retrouvés au cimetière où le p. Alain a animé une Célébration de la Parole sur le sens de faire mémoire de nos défunts; une bonne occasion de rappeler le souvenir de ceux qui nous ont précédés, qu’ils soient inhumés là ou ailleurs, sans oublier les défunts de nos propres familles, nos amis et connaissances déjà auprès de Dieu. Nous avons ensuite partagé un succulent buffet à La Stanza. Tout repas où règne la fraternité peut devenir icône du banquet céleste.

– As in the past at this time of the year, Fr. Occhio, still the scholar and academic, is giving his talks on "Fides et Ratio" to the novices in Port Chester, N.Y. We made a community outing to Stratford, ON. to see Oscar Wilde's comedy "The Importance of being Earnest". - The Knights of Columbus and the Squires organized and animated a few days ago a Marian Hour in honour of Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. Finally, from October 31st to November 4th, Fr. Tom Dunne will be making his first official provincial visitation to our community. Some of his appointments include a visit with the Archbishop of Toronto, His Grace Thomas Collins, as well as with the Salesian Alumni from Hong Kong and Macau.

SURREY, B.C. October was a busy month of meetings, funerals and sacrament events: school Masses, confessions, retreats, birthdays and Thanksgiving.
Fr. Thomas Dunne, our Provincial, arrived a few days early before he began his official visitation with our community on Oct. 8th through the 11th. During that time, he met the OLGC School Staff and the Salesian Cooperators, visited Holy Cross School, celebrated a school Mass, as well as three weekend Masses. He met each confrere personally and gave his observations, conferences and closing remarks before an early departure on Thanksgiving morning. In light of that, we had our Thanksgiving dinner spread after the evening Sunday Mass.
The Salesian Alumni had a Fund Raiser Dinner Dance on the 17th in the Don Bosco Gym with over 300 in attendance. - The parishioners held a second collection after all the Masses for the Philippine flood victims, and generously raised 15 000$ for that relief effort.
Every Tuesday evening throughout October, Fr. Mario conducted a Liturgy Workshop for our Commentators, Lectors, Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers and Music/Choir Members. It was well attended, and pertained to the new changes that will take effect on the First Sunday of Advent here at OLGC Parish.
Fr. Jan’s 44th birthday was on the 26th and we celebrated it with two of our staff members, Mr. Rudy Custodio and Mr. Somboun Thadavong, who were also honoured for being “another year older.” Fr. Jan and Bro. Jerry prepared the staff party food treats, cards and gifts for the 30th in the MHC Hall. Instead we enjoyed a tasty Chaldean lunch on the 26th at the residence of Fr. Sarmed Biloues’ mother. The Parish Assembly also took place that same evening. The Parish Finance Council meeting was the following night. Intertwined in all these activities were the Bible Study sessions, Legion of Mary, El Shaddai and the new servers’ surprise Halloween Party after their practice session on the 31st. The Secondary School had their costume party the day before to the enjoyment of all.
In a nutshell, October galloped by very fast, but certainly held a lot of surprises with the passing of some ‘old time’ parishioners, who were active in their respective parish organizations, Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Women’s League.

Jerusalem- Ratisbonne Monastery
Here is an article about our Study Day on Priesthood. Our community attended this event. The archbishop spoke very well on a very timely topic.
All is well here. We celebrated the solemnity of Our Lady of Palestine with the patriarch at her shrine (in the middle of nowhere) with very many Palestinians. Being here certainly offers a real appreciation of the Church’s suffering.
In terms of studies and community, things are very smooth. My best to all the confreres.

“Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, was the guest lecturer for the official opening of the academic year. The topic was on priestly formation. Leading up to the presentation of the archbishop’s talk were a series of greetings by Patriarch Twal, academic and Salesian authorities. Next was a reading from Pope Benedict on the Year of the Priest, and finally a choral song by some of the students. The content of Fisichella’s topic was to give a framework for priestly formation in our day. First, he highlighted the difficulties present in the world, including materialism and relativism in the context of a post-modern world. In order to discuss these serious challenges, he put these contemporary ideas in the light of authentic Church teaching. Secondly, the archbishop offered a positive way forward. To overcome these, he powerfully presented the truth of Jesus’ resurrection as the touchstone to all further life and study. In this reality of our Lord’s rising, Fisichella offered a two-point framework for the priest or priest to be, this being a call to enter deeply into this mystery of Christ and into our contemporary culture by way of silence and tradition”. TORONTO-HAMILTON. The Salesian Family Commission is in the final stages of its preparation for our next Salesian Family Day to be held on Saturday, November 7Tth in St. Benedict's church hall. The theme of the day will be "A Missionary: who me?" Two young adult lay persons will share their experiences of Argentina, Mexico and Cambodia.
The St.Dominic Savio Club after-school program had to postpone its beginning sessions this Fall due to furnace problems. However, we have been informed that we will be starting up on November 10th with some 80 young members. - A good contingent of volunteers from the parish manifested on October 3rd and 4th for the Right to Life and Life Chain movements here in Toronto.
After a six week stay in Hong Kong, Fr. Joe Ho returned to Toronto. However, most of his time was spent sick in bed with a bad case of the flu. He is now gradually beginning to recover. - On Thanksgiving week end, Fr. George travelled to St. John, N.B. to bless his cousin's marriage. He experienced a return to his roots. – Recently Frs. Mike, Frank and George participated in a diocesan priests’ conference given by the well known writer and lecturer, Christopher West who spoke on the Theology of the Body. He is a prophetic voice for these modern times.
Fr. Richard returned among us for Thanksgiving after his short sabbatical. Among the activities of his few weeks of “time off”, he very much appreciated the retreat for priests in Ars, France. Some 1200 priests participated in that retreat animated mainly by the Archbishop of Vienna, Card. Schönborn.He immediately put himself to work in his new task as director of the Montreal community, meeting with the community and the house council, composed of Fr. Luc (v.d.) and Fr. Georges, pastor of St.Joseph.

INTERVIEW : CARDINAL OSCAR RODRIGUEZ M.
« Je suis un salésien hondurien né il y a 66 ans à Tegucigalpa ». C'est par ces mots que commencent les « confessions » du cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, archevêque de Tegucigalpa. Le Cardinal est aussi président de Caritas Internationalis depuis 2007. Il partage ici avec l’agence ZENIT l’histoire de sa vocation, l’un d’une série de témoignages recueillis en cette Année Sacerdotale. NS de sept. 2007, no 97, avait publié un témoignage semblable du Card.Tarcisio Bertone, Secrétaire d’État de Benoît XVI, également salésien. R.T.
ZENIT - Comment avez-vous été appelé à suivre le Seigneur ? Comment avez-vous décidé d'être prêtre ?
Card. Rodríguez Maradiaga - L'appel est venu du Seigneur, par l'intermédiaire d'un prêtre, le directeur du collège. J'étais conquis par la vie salésienne : à l'âge de six ans, j'ai commencé mes études primaires. L'ambiance me plaisait énormément ; j'ai été enfant de chœur, et c'est précisément quand je revenais de la messe au collège de Maria Auxiliadora avec le directeur, futur archevêque de Tegucigalpa, que celui-ci m'a demandé : « N'aimerais-tu pas être prêtre ? ». J'ai immédiatement répondu que oui. Dès cet instant, je me sentais déjà au séminaire ; mais quand, ayant terminé mes études primaires à douze ans, je déclarai à mon père que je voulais entrer comme aspirant au Petit séminaire salésien, il me répondit : « tu n'iras nulle part, car ce n'est pas toi qui décide tout seul. Tu es très turbulent, et tu seras renvoyé dès le lendemain ». En fait, depuis ce jour, il m'est souvent arrivé de penser qu' « il avait raison ».
Alors, j'ai oublié ma vocation et me suis consacré passionnément à l'aviation. Enfant, j'ai appris l'anglais, précisément pour pouvoir lire des livres d'aviation, j'ai appris à piloter à 14 ans. J'étais sur le point de terminer mon baccalauréat, quand nous avons eu des exercices spirituels. Je me souviens, le prédicateur nous a dit : « si Dieu vous appelle, ne soyez pas lâches ». Cette phrase a retenti en moi, et je me suis dit : « Dieu m'appelle et je ne veux pas être lâche ». Voilà pourquoi je suis entré chez les Salésiens d'abord comme aspirant, ensuite au noviciat : tel fut mon chemin.
ZENIT - Vous nous révélez votre passion pour l'aviation, mais beaucoup vous connaissent aussi comme un passionné de musique...
Card. R. - Oui parce que, dans mon enfance, la musique régnait à la maison : mon père aimait la musique, ma sœur aînée jouait du piano et mes autres frères aussi. Tout petit, j'ai étudié le piano. Lorsque je suis entré à la Congrégation salésienne, on m'a destiné à l'enseignement de la musique : j'ai dû suivre les cours du Conservatoire et, pendant de nombreuses années, j'ai enseigné la musique sacrée, le chant grégorien, qui m'enchante. En outre, j'ai organisé des orchestres et fanfares dans les collèges où j'ai travaillé, et voilà comment j'ai appris à jouer de divers instruments.
ZENIT - Divers instruments de musique.. Lesquels, par exemple?
Card. R. - Par exemple, le saxophone, l'accordéon, l'orgue, le piano, la batterie, la contrebasse, la clarinette... Ainsi, j'avais la vie belle.
ZENIT - Quelqu'un vous a-t-il influencé de manière spéciale dans votre décision de suivre Dieu ?
Card. R. - Oui, ce fut naturellement le prêtre qui dirigeait le collège, et aussi Jean Bosco. L'année précédant mon ordination sacerdotale, ma mère me révéla quelque chose que j'ignorais : j'étais né prématuré et, d'après le médecin, je n'allais pas survivre. Alors, elle a pris la résolution de réciter tous les jours le chapelet pour ma santé, promettant que, si Dieu m'appelait, elle m'offrirait au Seigneur. Je ne l'ai jamais su et vous voyez le résultat.
EDMONTON: A Salesian Cooperator meeting was held on Oct. 5 for both parishes at St. John Bosco Parish with Fr. Dunne talking to the group. - A Deanery meeting for the priests from 7 parishes was held on Oct. 20 at St. John Bosco Parish. - On Saturday, Oct. 24, St. John Bosco Parish celebrated their 25th Anniversary. Archbishop Richard Smith was present as well as a few former pastors. Best wishes were also sent by those former pastors that could not be present, including Fr. Luc Lantagne. A great meal and then entertainment that was provided by the youth was enjoyed by all.
St. Dominic Savio Parish hosted a “Welcome Back” Weekend on Oct. 3/4. Fr. Dunne was in Edmonton from Oct. 3-5 for the two parishes’ visitation.- On Oct. 4 we had our First Reconciliation Registration meeting for parents and children. There are 54 children this year preparing for the sacrament. Oct. 5 – 9 was Read In Week at all of our Catholic Schools. The Youth Minister and Pastoral Assistant read to several classes at 2 different schools. The Youth Minister went to St. John Bosco School for their Thanksgiving celebration and Fr. Bernie participated in the Thanksgiving school celebrations on Oct. 9.
The parish Food Drive, as well as the food collected at the schools, was very successful. - About every 5 years we schedule a Parish Pictorial Directory. We encourage all parishioners to come out and have their photo taken. The photo sessions were from Oct. 13 – 24 with all the committee photos being taken on the evening of Oct. 20. The pictorial makes a wonderful resource, especially for us here in the parish office (you recognize the name but can’t put a face to it or vice-versa!). - Our 17th Annual Pasta Supper was held in the gym of the junior high school on Oct. 30. The gym was filled with 300+ adults and children who enjoyed a wonderful meal, a silent auction and many raffles. The WYD members coordinated this event for the second year. They did an excellent job and we look forward to the 18th Annual. - On Oct. 31, the Youth Minister scheduled an “All Saints Party” in the church basement but the nice weather and lure of “Trick or Treating” won out instead for the young people.

MONTREAL The first days of October, the pastoral animator, Nadia Martone, held a meeting of the catechism animators, that is, the young adults who volunteer their services for the teaching of catechism, in order to plan the work of the year.
All along the month of October, the catechetical équipe met with the parents for 5 evenings to explain to them the programme and to sensitise them to their responsibilities in accompanying their children throughout the year so that what they learn may bear fruit. The lessons have already started for about 860 children; they are divided in groups of about 15, each group with its own catechist. Every young adult offers generously an hour of his/her free time for this important religious activity.
We also began the marriage preparation courses for the couples who will get married in 2010. On 4 Sundays there will be 3 hours of reflection on their conjugal duties in view of marriage.
Fr. Giuseppe left us for Italy on the 6th after 12 years as pastor of Maria Ausiliatrice. The day before, the staff, i.e. the more immediate collaborators, had shared a special breakfast with Fr. Giuseppe to express to him their gratitude and good wishes. The parishioners had also expressed to him their gratitude for his dedicated service all these years, for the help given to many families and individuals in need, and among many other things, the recent renovation of the interior of the church for its 25th anniversary. On the day itself, the community of confreres concelebrated the Eucharist, followed by a fraternal dinner. Of course, Fr. Giuseppe’s favourite wine accompanied the courses (was it Barbera?). He took an evening flight to Turin.
Father will reside with the Salesian community of Lanzo Torinese, while following some courses of aggiornamento at the Theological Institute of La Crocetta in Turin, a house that has formed many confreres of our Province.

ZENIT - Parlez-nous de certains des moments les plus heureux que vous avez connus depuis votre décision de dire « oui » à Dieu ?
Card. R. - Il y en a de très nombreux. Logiquement, quand j'ai prononcé mes premiers vœux en tant que salésien, toute ma vie j'avais rêvé d'être salésien et j'ai donc éprouvé une immense joie. Ensuite, bien sûr, pour moi le moment le plus heureux et décisif a été mon ordination sacerdotale, c'est la plus grande grâce que Dieu peut accorder à une personne, après le baptême. Par la suite, l'épiscopat a représenté pour moi un moment plutôt de crainte, et je ne pensais pas que c'était ma vocation ; mais j'ai accepté parce que don Bosco disait qu'un souhait du pape pour un salésien équivalait à un ordre, alors j'ai accepté dans la foi. Et je crois que le Seigneur m'a accordé 31 années d'épiscopat remplies de joie, de grand bonheur. Lorsque le pape Jean-Paul II m'a créé cardinal, ce fut une surprise. Je n'y avais jamais songé, car le Honduras n'avait jamais eu de cardinal. Si bien que j'ai été heureux à cause de la joie que je procurais à mon peuple.
ZENIT - Et certains des moments les plus difficiles ?
Card. R. - Eh bien, le Seigneur dit également : « Si quelqu'un veut venir à ma suite, qu'il renonce à lui-même, qu'il prenne sa croix et qu'il me suive ». Parmi ces moments, il y a eu la mort de mon père, alors que je commençais à peine mon chemin, en deuxième année de philosophie. J'ai connu aussi parfois des problèmes de santé, j'ai souffert de l'asthme pendant plusieurs années, j'ai été miraculeusement guéri par la Vierge, quand j'étais en première année de théologie. Par la suite, j'ai traversé de nombreuses difficultés à cause de la situation en Amérique centrale. En tant qu'évêque administrateur apostolique, je me trouvais dans un diocèse situé sur la frontière entre le Guatemala et El Salvador : nous avions des réfugiés. C'était au temps de la guérilla et, bien entendu, tout était bien difficile. Un autre moment très triste a été la mort de Jean-Paul II.
ZENIT - Pourquoi ?
Card. R. - Parce que je l'aimais infiniment, il était pour ainsi dire mon père, et il m'a toujours témoigné une confiance et une affection très grandes. Bien sûr, nous voyions bien son état se dégrader, mais je n'ai jamais imaginé qu'il allait mourir si vite. Pour moi, ce fut comme lorsque je perdis mon père. (Mercedes de la Torre)

SHERBROOKE. Il arrive très souvent que des anciens du Salésien viennent nous faire une visite pendant la journée ou encore pendant la soirée à notre résidence. Mais le samedi 4 octobre était tout à fait spécial : dans la soirée, tous les finissants ’09 étaient au gymnase. Non pas qu’ils s’étaient donné le mot! Ils y étaient pour la remise officielle des diplômes de la promotion 2008-2009. Mesdemoiselles et messieurs, tous en toge noire! Plus de 200 parents et amis étaient venus partager ce moment de bonheur avec eux. Depuis quelques années déjà, à cette occasion le Prix Périclès est décerné à un/e ancien/ne s’étant distingué dans le domaine des arts Le récipiendaire cette année était M. Mathieu Desruisseaux (2001).Parmi autres « distinctions », il est titulaire d’un B.A. en sciences politiques de Harvard University, d’un certificat en mandarin de Princeton U, Il a aussi étudié à l’Université de Beijing. Il parle le français, l’anglais, l’espagnol, et a une bonne compréhension du mandarin.
Il a livré un message très pertinent aux jeunes, les invitant à s’impliquer dans les divers secteurs de la société. La soirée fut aussi l’occasion de remettre la Médaille du Gouverneur Général à l’étudiant ayant atteint la plus haute moyenne (il y avait 4 nominés); elle fut décernée à David Pellerin qui réussit à conserver une moyenne de 96.6%. Dans son discours « d’acceptation », il exprima sa reconnaissance à tous ceux/celles qui ont contribué à sa formation pendant ses 5 ans au Salésien.
Les Portes Ouvertes - le 18 oct..- rencon- trèrent un grand succès. Plus de 300 pochettes d’information furent remises aux familles qui visitèrent le Salésien ce jour-là. Bravo à la nombreuse équipe du personnel enseignant et non-enseignant qui sut user de beaucoup d’imagination et de dévouement pour savoir dire ce qu’est le Salésien! Une autre PO aura lieu d’ici quelques jours.
Deux rencontres de jeunes eurent lieu au Camp Savio pendant le mois; les retrouvailles des jeunes du Bosco Bicycle (été ’09) et les JMS (Jeunes Missionnaires du Salésien), 13 jeunes de la 4e sec. qui préparent un stage à un orphelinat salésien à Mexico City en mars. Ces derniers seront accompagnés cette année par le p. Alain, Patricia Picker et un ancien qui a fait le stage il y a quelques années, Antoine Dumas.
Il y a quelques jours, nous avons eu le privilège d’accueillir le p. Olivier Robin, un salésien du Centre Jean-Bosco de Lyon, France, en instance de doctorat à l’Université Laval. Le 2 novembre étant une journée pédagogique, il a animé un atelier pour le personnel de l’école sur la pédagogie de Don Bosco. Nous avons fait connaissance avec Rémi- quelques-uns de nous en tout cas !- tel qu’il apparaît dans le film Ratatouille. Par le visionnement d’un excellent DVD, nous avons aussi pu faire- avec Marie- un cheminement éducatif-spirituel de certains lieux où Don Bosco a vécu et œuvré. Ceci à l’aide du volume Aux Racines d’un Rêve : sur les pas de Don Bosco, publié récemment pour souligner le 150e de la fondation des salésiens. Sa présentation fut très appréciée et signifiante.
